Cornelis van Rooyen 1695-1768

I am unsure how the VOC sailed from Holland to Ceylon, but it could be via the Cape of Good Hope at the southernmost tip of South Africa. I have translated the web contents from Dutch to English and edited the contents to make out the genealogy for the van Rooyen descendants. Princess van Rooyen is the only van Rooyen name I have, to search for my ascendants.

CORNELIS VAN ROOYEN

Cornelis van Rooyen (van Rooijen, van Roijen) was from Gorcum (today known as Gorinchem), near Merwederivier in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. Cornelis was baptised at the Reformed Church in Gorinchem on 1695-04-15. He was the son of Reijnier Roijen, a miller by trade, and Fijke Vermeulen (Fijke is a variant of the name Sophia (Sofieken).

His left his home Zealand and departed on 1713-10-14 on the ship Middle Forest in the service of the VOC (United East India Company) as midshipman (job title of the military for trained navigating officer), and arrived at the Cape in 1714.

Cornelis married 3 times. His first marriage was to Jacomijntje Gerritsz van Deventer on 1720-10-27 at Drakenstein (Paarl today). She was baptized on 1692-03-09. She was the second child of Gerrit Jansz van Deventer and Arriaentje Jacobs. From this marriage there were eleven children born. After Jacomijntje died, Cornelis married a second time, with Cornelia Botha (the widow of Hans Jurgen Potgieter) on 1738-04-13 at Drakenstein. His third marriage was to Barbara Myburgh (the widow of Isaac Es) on 1754-05-12. There was no children born of the marriage to Barbara.

Cornelis's farm "Nabygelegen" was in Bovlei district of Wellington, 20 acres 320 vkrd. His farm was taken over on 1721-12-02 by Johann Lorenz who sold it in 1741 to Pierre du Plessis.   Cornelis was a member of the first heemraad on Roodezand (now Shimla) in 1743 as a court of law that the inhabitants of that area were nominated.
